Abstract

The article discusses drug violence in Mexico. An ongoing war between the drug cartels Los Zetas and the Gulf Cartel has killed thousands, and the violence has escalated since 2006 when Mexican President Félipe Calderón decided to deploy the Mexican military against the cartels. It is widely understood that local governments in Tamaulipas state have been corrupted by the illicit drug trade. The cartels control the newspapers in the region and discourage media coverage of drug-related violence. Yolanda Figueroa wrote a book that connected the Gulf Cartel to the family of former Mexican President Carlos Salinas, and was murdered along with her husband and children not long thereafter.
