Abstract

The author reflects on the definition of the two sub-types of type 1 diabetes. The author says that the first sub-type is type 1A, which account for approximately 90% of cases of type 1 diabetes in Caucasians. The author also notes that the diabetes type 1B or idiophatic has clinical features of type 1A, however has no evidence of islet autoimmunity. The author cites that type 1B includes fulminant diabetes described in Japan that account for 15-20% of new-onset type 1 diabetes.
