Abstract

Introduction: Adiponectin is a protein synthesized in the adipose tissue, which circulates at high concentrations in serum with antiatherogenic, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory effects. It has been reported that adiponectin levels are diminished in hypertensive states of pregnancy. Objective: To evaluate adiponectin plasmatic concentration in patients with and without hypertensive diseases of pregnancy. Patients and Method: An observational, longitudinal, prospective, non-blind and comparative study of 55 pregnant patients with hypertension and 56 healthy pregnant patients was done. Plasmatic adiponectin was analyzed by ELISA method. The statistics were t Student and p determination; media, variance and U test of Mann Whitney. Results: The average level of plasmatic adiponectin was significantly lower in patients with hypertension than patients without hypertension (3.12 mcg/mL vs. 4.41 mcg/ mL) (p <0.00042). The non-parametric analysis of variances showed higher values of adiponectin in preeclamptic-eclamptic patients, than the ones with gestational hypertension. Conclusions: Statistically significant lower values of adiponectin in patients with hypertension and pregnancy were demonstrated. Meanwhile in this group, these values were lesser in gestational hypertension than preeclampsia-eclampsia (variance 1.82 vs. 5.25, F= 2.88). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
