Abstract
- The article discusses the layoff of teachers in New York City, which will be used as a strategy to reduce a state spending gap. Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers (UFT), comments on how the layoffs will impact class size and offers his own thoughts on education finance. The process by which the 4,600 teachers would be laid off is considered in terms of an appropriate layoff policy. The opinions of New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and New York state Governor Andrew M. Cuomo are considered.
