Abstract

The article focuses on the effect natural disasters has on the reinsurance industry. It states that the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan is expected to have a muted effect on insurance premiums. It mentions nuclear risks usually are not insured privately with the Japan Earthquake Reinsurance Company and the Japanese government expected to bear the brunt of losses. It comments that excessive spare capacity in the reinsurance industry kept premiums from rising significantly in 2010.
