Abstract

The article discusses the Progress Movement, an African American community economic development program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It examines the leadership of Reverend Leon Howard Sullivan, minister at Philadelphia's Zion Baptist Church. The author comments on Zion Investment Associates (ZIA), later renamed the Progress Investment Associates, a for-profit corporation created by Sullivan and church members. The philanthropic group the Zion Non-Profit Charitable Trust (ZNPCT) is also examined. Projects launched by the Progress Movement included apartment complexes and the shopping centers called Progress Plaza and Progress Plaza II, or Progress Haddington Plaza.
