Abstract
- The family plays an important role in Romanian international migration. During my fieldwork in two villages in Romania, I came across two families many of whose members had emigrated. Comparing two villages, the one with a short history of migration but the other with a long history, this article explores the exclusive or complementary use of family ties and/or religious, community or friendship bounds in the development of migration depending on the history of migration, variety of available ties and stage of migration: The effort is made to detect family influence on migration patterns and the emergence of transnationalism.
