Abstract

The article suggests the best practice models and principles that universities and faculty senates in the U.S. should adopt to ensure the consistency of commercial and academic-industry relationships on campus with the university's core academic research and educational missions. It stresses the important role that the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) should play in implementing these practices, including issuing appropriate statements of concern and undertaking investigations whenever sufficient evidence exists to warrant such action. Some of the examples of best practices are cited, including dissuading faculty members from lending their names to commercially ghostwritten papers or research.
