Abstract

This paper presents a review on the theoretical and methodological background of population geography. It begins with a discussion on the main focus of this subdiscipline: territorial variations concerning the distribution and concentration of population, the age and sex structure, and the sociodemographic events. Next, it looks specifically at the contribution of quantitative methods and the relevance of spatial demography. Lastly, it reflects upon the future of population geography, and suggests that it needs to rethink its objectives, given the obvious complexity of 21st century (urban) societies.
