Abstract
- The article focuses on a study which evaluated the burden of tuberculosis in households of patients with multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) tuberculosis in Lima, Peru between 1996 and 2003. Results show that index patients with XDR tuberculosis received three or more tuberculosis treatment regimens than MDR tuberculosis patients. A total of 117 cases were identified in 4,503 household contacts. The prevalence of tuberculosis was higher in the MDR tuberculosis households at 2.60%.
