Abstract

In this article the author discusses her beliefs regarding the differences between the real-life responsibilities of U.S. college professors and those depicted in the news media and popular literature. She presents her thoughts on faculty tenure in response to the article "Finishing School: The Case for Getting Rid of Tenure," which appeared in the August 11, 2010 issue of "Slate" magazine, comments that being actively involved in research can benefit a professor's teaching, and argues for post-tenure evaluations as a way to ensure teacher effectiveness and educational productivity.
