Abstract
- Translation as a form of communcation has a very long tradition and it appeared several thousand years B.C. In the period of nomadic tribes, in the Stone Age, different clan and tribal languages were created. This difference between languages became even greater in the Bronze Age. Therefore, translation appeared as the only solution for the communication outside one's own language community. Naturally, in that prehistoric and protohistoric period, there was only one kind of translation: oral translation. And the first literary translation appeared in the 4th century B.C. It is The Epic of Gilgamesh, a work of an unknown writer. Beginnings of translation in the Serbian-Slavic written literature date back from the time when two Slavic apostles, Cyril (827-869), called the Philosopher, and his brother Methodius (825- 885) translated The Bible and Greek liturgy into Old Church Slavonic, and the Serbs, copying these translations, later introduced into them features of their speech, from which the Serbian redaction of the Old Church Slavonic language was created, Serbo-Slavonic. However, it is believed that the first Serbian translator was a medieval writer Sava Nemanjić (1175-1235) who translated from Greek Evergetis Typikon (the book of regulations for church rituals and monastic life in Orthodox monasteries). This paper presents the history of translation among the Serbs, as well as a chronological series of translations from the French language into Serbian, as well as the Serbian translations from English, German, Italian and Russian translations of French literature till the mid-19th century.
