Abstract

The article reports on the increase in the number of physicians practicing positive defensive medicine in the U.S. A survey reveals that 92.5% of surgeons have ordered imaging tests to protect themselves from lawsuits, and they attributed 34% of overall healthcare costs to defensive medicine. Also, 42% of physicians have restricted their practice to avoid risky procedures, patients with complex conditions, and patients perceived to be litigious.
