Abstract
- The article discusses the use of apostrophe, a figure of speech, in Ancient Greek oratory. Specific focus is given to the use of this figure of speech as a means to further one's political career. Apostrophe allowed Greek political actors to connect with their audience in a way that traditional speechwriting could not. Famous orators discussed include Aeschines, Demosthenes, and Quintilian. A list of ancient Greek texts containing oratorical apostrophe is provided. The use of such speeches in Greek law courts is analyzed.
