Abstract
- The article discusses the creation of private military forces by the Russian energy companies Gazprom and Transneft. It chronicles how former President Vladimir Putin and President Dmitri Medvedev have strong economic ties to Gazprom and explores how Russia's control of energy resources has revived its post-Soviet Union economy. It examines reasons why the Russian Duma approved the development of these forces and explores ways in which the formation of these forces influences Russian politics.
