Abstract

The article profiles Walden Bello, a human rights activist in the Philippines during the presidency of Ferdinand Marcos. It is noted that Bello is one of the founders of Akbayan: Citizens' Action Party, which sent him to the Philippines congress. A number of subjects are addressed including Bello's relationship with Imelda Marcos, the widow of the Philippines dictator, the alleged corruption of former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and Bello's attempt to lead the Philippines away from a system of free market capitalism, substituting a government plan for income redistribution.
