Abstract

Rapid transformation of women's roles in twentieth-century society, including feminism, is seen as a psychological threat to men. Using the work of English psychotherapist Roger Horrocks, the author discusses sociological data from urban Veliki Novgorod. Marginalized male drug addicts are studied in the context of a society that has criminalized drug addiction and forced men into dangerous positions of disillusionment, aggression, and deviance. Men are said to be the overwhelming majority of drug and alcohol abusers in the Novgorod region, where relatively low official statistics are balanced by more accurate perspective from penal colony officials.
