Abstract

The cello is said to have been Rachmaninoff's favorite string instrument. In his lushly romantic Sonata for Cello and Piano in G minor he wrote sweepingly lyrical lines that unfold against a virtuoso piano part. The cellist Gautier Capucon and the pianist Gabriela Montero, both passionate musicians, reveled in the work's Golden Age Romanticism during their recital on Saturday evening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
