Abstract
- The article discusses the study of nonfiction texts in education to help American middle school and high school students learn about Islam and Muslim culture in light of what the author views as stereotypes and misinformation that became common after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The author discusses several texts including "Islam: Worship, Festivals, and Ceremonies From Around the World" by T. Barnes, "Islam Explained" by Tahar Ben Jelloun, and "Islam: Opposing Viewpoints" by W. Dudley and suggests that they can help educators teach about critical literacy, cultural diversity, and marginalized groups. Other topics include addressing the role of women in Muslim culture, teaching students about worldviews, and addressing the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with students.
