Abstract

Previous research has shown greater consistency in right handers between related behaviors when the left cerebral hemisphere was selectively more activated than when it was not. Two experiments were performed to test whether this effect extends to the consistency of social behaviors with related traits and attitudes. Selective hemisphere activation was manipulated in a manner that has been used to influence perceptual and cognitive asymmetries, by inducing an individual's attention toward the direction opposite to the hemisphere to be selectively activated. In Experiment 1, subjects with induced left-hemisphere activation replicated Buss and Scheier's (1976) finding that high private self-consciousness was a predictor of high self-attributions. As predicted, those subjects with induced right-hemisphere activation did not respond in a manner consistent with their self-consciousness trait. Experiment 2 found the same effects for attitude-behavior consistency. The behaviors measured followed from previously measured attitudes during left but not during right-induced hemisphere activation. Models based on the lateral asymmetry of consistency and of focus of attention are offered as competing explanations for these results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
