Abstract

The article discusses the ship of the line HMS Royal Charles. It was originally constructed as a war ship in 1658 and named the Naseby by British Commonwealth leader Oliver Cromwell and was renamed in 1660 during the Restoration of British King Charles II. Accounts of the ship and the political culture of Great Britain written by English diarist Samuel Pepys are considered. Other subjects include public opinion regarding the political change from the Commonwealth to the monarchy during the reign of Charles II, the marriage of King Charles to Catherine of Braganza, and Great Britain's foreign relations during the period.
