Abstract

The article highlights the views of various commentators on the white paper "Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS." John Appleby, chief economist of The King's Fund, argues that choice has never been a reality for most patients and primary care trusts in Great Britain. Consultant chest physician Peter Davies claims that reorganization is irrelevant to the needs of the health service. While Jacky Davis, co-chair of the NHS Consultants' Association, argues that the white paper will improve the commissioning and delivery of National Health Service (NHS) care by the private sector.
