Abstract

The article discusses research on how a rubber band's shape is deformed as it rolls around faster. Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Techonology in Cambridge andÉcole Polytechnique in Paris, France molded circular polymer loops made of vinyl polysiloxane and placed them in a spinning drum to see how the bands will deform. Results of the study showed that circular bands become shaped into long ovals at lower speed while at higher speed the top collapses with the center almost touching the bottom.
