Abstract

Objective: It was aimed to determine the demographic features of children with mental disabilities and children with physical disabilities, their utilization of health services and their expectations from health services. Methods: The population-based descriptive study was conducted in Konya in 2009. All participants with disabilities that could be reached via the information support of public hospitals, health centers, Provincial Directorate for Social Services and other related institutions are included in the research. Data was obtained from the families by face to face interview at participants' home or in the appointed places. A survey was used about demographic features of disabled children, their benefiting from health services and their expectations. Results: Of the disabled children in the study included 177 (68.6%) were boys and 81 (31.4%) were girls. With 16.7% of families of children have had no health insurance and 32.9 % of the parents had consanguinity marriage. 36.0% of the children with disabilities were the first child of the family. The first institution they preferred to benefit from was hospital with a percentage of 53.5%. The most common services they receive 28.3% of health institutions did not find physically inappropriate. Rate of complainant was 31.8% of health services and 21.3% of health staff's behaviors. Of the families having children with disabilities 50.0% had more expectations from health services. Conclusion: Developing physical and social conditions of health care institutions for disabled persons, increasing to benefit for disabled persons from the primary health institutions and improving relationship between disabled person and health staff might be useful to satisfy the expectations of the disabled persons.
