Abstract

The article examines how games, especially Internet games, alter human behavior. Research on how competition alters human behavior, often in irrational ways, is discussed. The use of consumer reward programs which use elements of game mechanics in Internet marketing is considered. The use of digital tracking systems to create competitions which encourage socially positive behaviors such as water conservation or exercise is considered.
