Abstract

The article presents news related to computer industry. The Division of Materials Development and Research of the National Science Foundation's Directorate for Science and Engineering Education is soliciting proposals for projects that will explore the consequences of the availability of calculators and computers for the elementary mathematics curriculum. John R. B. Clement has been appointed to the new position of director of governmental activities by the American Federation of Information Processing Societies. Since its founding, the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) has been concerned with measurement and with determining the precise values and metrics for physical phenomena. It has also made contributions to metrology in numerous scientific and engineering disciplines. The Computer Measurement Research Facility project at NBS is developing a set of metrics and measurement techniques to characterize the performance of parallel processing systems. The Computer Measurement Group (GMG) has announced an awards program for students submitting technical papers to the GMG 86 Conference, to be held from December 9-12, 1986, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Under this program, GMG will pay the costs associated with a student's participation in the conference, including registration, hotel accommodations, and round-trip airfare.
