Abstract

This article reports developments related to the computing and information technologies in the U.S. as of June 1985. The National Science Foundation has selected 200 engineers and scientists to receive Presidential Young Investigator Awards. The awards, which fund research by faculty members near the beginning of their careers, are intended to help universities attract and retain outstanding young PhD's who might otherwise pursue non-teaching careers. Approximately 1,000 awards will be given to young faculty members at institutions across the U.S. during the five-year program. The proposal for a new structure for the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) was presented to the IFIP Council in March by the Task Group on Restructuring, The Task Group is to revise the proposal according to discussions that took place at the council meeting and comments from interested persons. The revised proposal is to circulate among General Assembly (GA) members and will presumably be presented to the GA in September.
