Abstract

KABUL, Afghanistan -- An Afghan soldier killed three British soldiers in a premeditated attack in Helmand Province early Tuesday, and then escaped into the night, Afghan officials said. The attack in Babaji, near the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah, is sure to further dampen backing for the war in Britain, where support has waned as casualties have risen sharply. In recent months, British forces have endured some of the toughest fighting of the nearly nine-year-old war in Helmand, a huge southern province of both desert and lush canal-fed agricultural land that is the country's opium heartland.
