Abstract

The article presents an examination of Islam in French colonial Algeria and explores how resistance to colonial rule was mounted by individuals who collaborated with the colonial system's administration over religion and state. It examines how positions of religious authority, that served as platforms for community leadership, were leveraged in order to gain colonial resources, but were then de-legitimized and replaced with non-colonial systems of authority. It discusses issues related to failed colonial policy, the growth of nationalism and the relationship between colonial collaborators and resisters.
