Abstract
- The article discusses the 2007 release of a 40th anniversary commemorative edition of "Cien años de soledad" ("One Hundred Years of Solitude") by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez, with respect to the concentration of media ownership and the politics of marketing. The author describes the edition as being supported by academic organizations, media companies like Bertelsmann AG, and other Latin American authors, but asserts that by commemorating a book so important to the Latin American literary boom of the 1960s and 1970s, the publishing and media industries may do a disservice to the field of Latin American literature, making it a book that is owned and revered worldwide but seldom read.
