Abstract

The article discusses why the U.S. Federal Reserve is unlikely to raise interest rates soon. A sovereign debt crisis in Europe has produced several adverse consequences for the U.S. economy including falling stock prices, higher borrowing costs between banks, and reduced activity in the commercial-paper market. Futures prices indicate investors have lowered their expectations for interest-rate hikes by July, 2011.
