Abstract

As he stood before the mirror in his Detroit hotel bathroom Wednesday night, Jim Joyce, the major league umpire whose disastrously wrong ''safe!'' call hours before cost a Tigers pitcher and baseball history a perfect game, undoubtedly fantasized about putting toothpaste back in its YouTube. Video replays clearly showed how the Cleveland Indians' Jason Donald was out at first base with two out in the ninth inning in what should have been the final and 27th straight out of a perfect game for the pitcher, Armando Galarraga. The replays were flashing across televisions and computer screens nationwide before Tigers Manager Jim Leyland had even finished arguing with Joyce on the field. But because of major league rules, Joyce himself could not consult those images while his decision could still be reversed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
