Abstract

The article discusses historical writing related to women's history in the U.S. The author notes how U.S. and foreign literature on women's history written by amateur women historians was rejected by male professional historians. Women scholars such as Mary Bateman and Lucy Maynard Salmon also focused on women's history. Despite the perception that aspects of anthropology such as social history and anthropology were incorporated into women's historical work in the 1970s, authors such as Alice Clark and Ivy Pinchbeck had already utilized these methods. Biographical reference works focusing on women, debates over the utility of cultural history and the application of postmodernist theory to women's history are noted.
