Abstract

The article reviews several studies on the characteristics of patients with influenza A (H1N1)-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome in Australia and New Zealand. It cites extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as treatment with 71% survival for patients with H1N1. It presents an inception cohort study during the winter period where almost 10% of patients infected with the 2009 H1N1 virus were pregnant women. It mentions a study that measured the mortality rate in patients with HIV infection diagnosed with Pneymocystis carinii pneumonia.
