Abstract

The article reports on the result of a study by Daniele Fanelli of the University of Edinburgh, Scotland which suggests that a publish or perish culture in which scientific careers rely on the volume of citations is distorting the results of experiments in U.S. states where academics publish more frequently. Findings showed that papers published in U.S. states are more likely to report positive results. The study support the hypothesis that competitive academic environments increase researchers' productivity and bias against negative outcomes.
