Abstract

Symmetric dialdimines were prepared from symmetric aliphatic diamines and nitro containing salicylaldehydes. These aldimines were characterized using element analysis and IR spectroscopy. The compounds were also analysed thermogravimetrically. Due to high numbers of nitro groups the compounds behaved like explosive materials. The size of alkyl groups bonding the salicylaldimine units is in reation with the the intensity of the exothermal degradation. All the aldimine compounds were observed to exothermally degrade before reaching their melting point. It was concluded using thermogravimetry that Schiff base compounds prepared from hydrazine and 1,2-diamino ethane degraded according to the oxygen equilibrium rule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
