An essay is presented which discusses how debates among cinephiles, or motion picture enthusiasts, indicate how the motion picture industry may respond to technological changes. The author discusses how developments in digital technology led to suggestions that motion pictures were in decline and comments on the reaction of film critics to the article "The Decay of Cinema," by Susan Sontag. She comments how cinephilia relates to film preservation.
