Abstract

The article focuses on an examination of German socialist Max Weber's theory of Protestant work ethic. It states that Weber theorized that the emphasis on worldly success by Calvinism resulted in the industrialization of Protestant nations and surpass Catholic nations. It mentions that economic historians argue that population growth numbers are useful indicators of the economic conditions in cities as good institutions and productive labor forces allow cities to expand over time. It comments on an examination of population growth in cities in the German-speaking world from 1300 to 1900 revealed no difference in the growth of Protestant or Catholic cities.
