Abstract

This article discusses the importance of teaching history students the idea of causality to understand why there could be multiple reasons for the occurrence of historical events. Students should understand that historical events have no neat progression from start to finish. The article suggests that history teachers create opportunities for students to engage in real historical inquiry to help free them from their typical myopic view of such events. History teachers can direct students to look forward from the beginning of an event so that they can put themselves in the shoes of the historical characters.
