Abstract

The article discusses how the sport of angling, which is fishing with a rod and line, has inspired illustrators and cartoonists since the late Middle Ages. The Guinness Book of Records lists angling as Great Britain's most popular single-participant sport which, according to the author, makes it unsurprising that there would be an abundance of British writings on the subject, such as Izaak Walton's book "The Compleat Angler." A historical overview of British literature and illustrations about angling is presented which includes several examples from the Middle Ages, such drawings by political cartoonist E. J. Sullivan and the cartoonist and writer James Thorpe who drew for the British periodical "Punch."
