Abstract

In this article the author discusses the use of magic in Scandinavian literature, especially as used in the "Íslendingasögur." The article argues that whether the magic has any basis in reality or not, it is used in the fictional sense in this text for a literary purpose and not for the purpose of documenting pagan religious rituals. The article also focuses on the use of magic by women and suggests that it was used to address issues of gender, honor, power, and society. The article discusses magic and witchcraft and their place in society of the time.
