Abstract

The article considers the Guodian Chu slip texts uncovered in 1993 at a late 4th-century BC Chu tomb in Jingmen, Hubei Province, China, focusing particularly on the political philosophy found in the Confucian text "Ziyi (Black Robe)." The author compares the text with "Analects (Lunyu)," and "Works of Mencius (Mengzi)" to consider alterations in early Confucian texts on how rulers and their followers should ideally interact. The texts agree that political leaders are effective rulers if they lead by example and embrace moral and ethical behaviors.
