Abstract

This article presents an overview of a blockade which was erected in 2002 near Slant Lake in Ontario, Canada by members of the Anishinaabe Indians, who are also know as members of the Grassy Narrows First Nation. A discussion of the anthropological aspects of the blockade, which was built in an effort to protest against the clearcutting of forests in the area, which the Anishinaabe people feel are located on Indian land, is presented. A cultural revitalization of Anishinaabe Indians which led to the blockade is discussed. Troubled relationships which have existed between Canadian Indians and anthropologists who have attempted to study them are examined.
