Abstract

The article features the study that aims to determine the difference in perioperative outcomes between unilateral total knee arthroplasties (UTKAs) and bilateral total knee arthroplasties (BTKAs) in the U.S. The study analyzes the data from Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 1998 to 2006. Researchers separated data on BTKAs, healthcare-system related and patient demographics, and the incidence of procedure-related complication and in-hospital mortality. The study concludes that BTKAs are more risky compared to UTKAs while BTKAs caused patients to increase their morbidity.
