Abstract
- In this article the author reflects on the relationship among stem anatomy, plant performance, and life history in studying functional traits of plants. The author focuses on a certain trait: wood density, which is related to a plant's growth rate, water storage, mechanical strength, efficiency and safety of hydraulic transport. The author discusses the factors that affect the variations in wood density in different species of plants.
