Abstract

The article discusses the medical implications of a discovery made by researchers Elizabeth Blackburn, Jack Szostak, and Carol Greider concerning telomeres which won them the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009. The researchers discovered that the telomeres, which are the tips of chromosomes, are Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) sequences that have the ability to protect chromosomes from erosion. The discovery also included the involvement of an enzyme in the repair after mitosis. Information on the ability of telomeres and telomerase to provide protection against threats to the genome is also presented.
