Abstract

The article discusses the report "Confronting 'Death on Wheels': Making Roads Safe in Europe and Central Asia," released by the World Bank on November 19, 2009. Areas mentioned in the report include the Commonwealth of Independent States, eastern and central Europe, the Baltics and the Balkans. Reasons cited for the traffic accidents in these countries are weak road safety management capacity, poor roads and an exponential increase in the number of vehicles, among others. Components of an effective road safety strategy are enumerated.
