Abstract

This article reports on volatility in the stock market in the United States as of December 2009. An analysis of the Chicago Board Options Exchange's VIX index, which tracks volatility in S&P 500 options, is presented. It is suggested that increased bank losses in commercial real estate and consumer credit, in addition to a failing housing market and increased debt could cause more volatility in the future.
