Abstract

Abstract: Bipolar disorder is an often devastating illness characterized by the implication of genetic, environmental and developmental factors. Although family, twin and adoption studies consistently indicate a strong genetic component, studies aiming at identifying genetic vulnerability factors produced conflicting results. This chapter gives an overview of linkage, case/control and Whole Genome Association studies in bipolar disorder. Chromosomal regions with the best evidence for the presence of vulnerability factors are presented and synthesized. These include areas on chromosome 1q, 4q, 5p, 7q, 8q, 10p, 11p, 12q, 13q, 16p, 17q, 18p, 18q, 21q, 22q and Xq, with consistent independent linkage and association results with candidate genes.
