Abstract

Analyzing historical change of nationalistic discourse in Korean political regime and social movements regarding Korean people abroad, I interpret the meaning of the notion of Korean nation and problematize the political construction of ‘one’ national entity of Korea. .x000d.For the analysis, mainly comparing two periods â€" before and after Korean democratization since 1980’s â€" I investigate the debates on and development of national security issue in Korean politics, and changes of policy and representation of Korean people abroad (especially Korean-Americans.) In addition, based on my observation on related NGO’s and interviews with government officials and activists, I argue that Korean nationalism, constructed through national security concerns and colonial experiences, has been a major factor in Korean politics, which was significant in the authoritarian regime. However, shifting relationship between the Korean nation-state and Korean-Americans after democratization shows different ways in which Korean-Americans’ representation and mobilization in Korean political arena are constructed in the name of nationalism. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
